Discovering Your Purpose In Life
Discovering Your Purpose in Life February 6, 2022
“When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what is man, that Thou dost take thought of him? And the son of man, that Thou doest care for him? Yet Thou hast made him a little lower than God, and doest crown him with glory and majesty! Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth!” (Psalms 8:3-9)
When I consider: King David wrote many of the Psalms found in the Old Testament. They are a beautiful collection of many thoughts and questions that he had when he faced various situations in life. Some were very challenging and fearful. Other times he seemed confused and puzzled as to why things were happening the way they were. Then there were moments when he stopped and reflected on life and his part and place in it such as we find in his words expressed in Psalms 8:3-9. We live in a very busy, fast paced world and taking the time to stop and consider life and our part in it isn’t, I’m afraid, something that is on the priority list of many people. Yet David took the time to do so.
What is man: After considering the vastness of the universe and everything that exists in it David asks God why He would even be mindful of mankind. We are so little compared to the universe yet God places us above all creation and everything is put under our feet. Mankind rules over all and is crowned with glory and majesty. All that is created, no matter how big or small, is created for our benefit and survival. The four seasons of the year are necessary for the earth to keep supplying us with food. That is their design and purpose. Surely one can clearly see that mankind rules the earth and all that is in it is for his usage.
O Lord, our Lord: Knowing mankind’s purpose on earth one can only concur with David’s words: “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth!” If we can just take the time to consider our reason for existing then maybe, just maybe, our life will have more meaning and joy. God has made His existence very clear to us as the apostle Paul says in Romans 1:20 which states: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they (mankind) are without excuse (as to not acknowledging His existence and that He created this world and universe).
Our greatest purpose in life is to know our Creator, realize that we are a part of HIs creation and desire to know His will for our lives as He reveals that to us in the Bible.
