Free Taste Samples of God

Free Taste Samples of God                                      October 15, 2021

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and rescues them.  O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” (Psalms 34:7-8)

Have you ever been invited to someone’s home for a meal only to discover that they are cooking something you don’t like?  Well, you’re not sure if you like it or not but you’ve heard it doesn’t taste very good.  Perhaps, it’s liver, Brussels sprouts or English peas.  Hey, if they don’t smell good then how can they taste any good either, right?

My sisters had a friend that said she didn’t like liver although she had never eaten it before.  One night we invited her over for dinner and my dad made liver burgers.  They had the same ingredients mixed in as beef burgers would have; same condiments were also available as well as chips.  They even looked the same as beef burgers.  All of us knew what dad did and we said nothing.  After she had finished her burger dad asked her if she would like another one.  Eagerly, she said that she would.  The rest of us had a hard time keeping from laughing.  As she about half-way finished her second burger that it was then that dad told her that she was eating liver burgers.  She looked shocked in disbelief and then, seeing the rest of us laugh, she realized she had been tricked into eating liver and proceeded to gag.

Don’t you love it when your grocery store offers free samples of food or drinks as you’re shopping?  One could almost have a full meal just on those samples, couldn’t they?  But their purpose is to get you to taste the food for yourselves and then, by that tasting, convince you to buy that product.

There’s a valuable lesson here.  One is never sure if something tastes good or not until  they actually taste it for themselves.  Don’t always be quick to take the word of others concerning how they like the taste of something or whether they dislike it.  Find out for yourself.

The same is true when it comes to how people, even your friends, feel about God.  Is He tasteful or not?  In the scripture above, people are invited to taste and see for themselves if God is good or not.  I believe a lot of people would be surprised to discover God’s goodness just by sitting down and opening His word and begin reading.  I believe there is no book in existence that tastes as good as the word of God.  But don’t take my word for it – find out for yourself!!
